Summer's coming to a close and even with the school semester approaching steadily I still find myself having a really nice time of life. The weather here where I live has been absolutely gorgeous recently - having come out of the most scorching weeks of July and into the beautiful and yet still comfortable August. Runs, longboarding-sessions, and evening drives have all been some of the best yet.
A big thing that happened this week in my life was that my family purchased a car for my sister and I to use in the next couple years of school, and that's been a really exciting and fun thing to have happen. I'm not really a huge car guy, but man am I enjoying this thing.
It's a little Subaru Impreza 5-door, and I'm supremely happy to have it. We only just picked the thing up yesterday, and waxing & cleaning the outside of it properly is one of the primary reasons that this week's links are a day later than usual - please pardon the shoddy excuse.
As always, I hope you guys enjoy this week's links, and I'll see you all again around this time next week. Savor those last weeks of summer.
First contact: a walk around Plasencia with the Sony A7 Mark II - Analog Senses - My friend Álvaro Serrano's piece from earlier this week was just plain fun to read. Maybe once or twice before when it seems he's inspired to do so, he's just gone out and shot some gorgeous photographs and then written a simple writeup giving context or his thoughts. This time one of the major inspirations is his brand new camera, and it's enabled him to create a really enjoyable look around his hometown of Plasencia. I love little pieces like this one. Cheers man.
Zane Lowe Talks Beats 1's First Weeks, Working With Trent Reznor and Dr. Dre - Billboard - I've found myself enjoying Apple's Beats 1 radio station in the weeks since it's launch. I listen to specific times during the day knowing that I'll be able to tune in to specific shows, DJ's, or genres of music. And in general it's become a nice new thing in my life which I'm enjoying investing a little time into for what I get back out of it. Things haven't been hum-drum over at Beats 1 either, they've had a host of music and celebrity happenings occur around and on their station over the weeks, and this piece where Beats 1's main DJ - Zane Lowe - talks a bit about that was an interesting read for me. They're doing exiting things, and man they just must be having the time of their lives. Good for them.
The Two and Only — Emmazed - I'm always impressed by the quality with which Mahmoud Mfinanga shoots, writes, and puts together the content that he puts out on his blog - Emmazed. He's another teenage creator who's based nearby me geographically, and being able to look at his excellent work is always two parts inspiring and one parts discouraging. "Look! I can do that too!" vs "I should be doing that, but I'm not." I think it's good to have people like that to look up to and compare oneself to, just so long as it's in moderation. Mahmoud's work is well worth it either way, and I'd highly recommend taking a look through his back-catalog of pieces. There's some seriously good stuff in there.
Building Better Defaults — Shawn Blanc - Shawn Blanc has to be one of the more inspirational writers that I follow, and he's really had a heck of year writing pieces (and a whole course) worth reading. This week brought another one of his pieces, this one talking about the value and importance of building a good default amount of time that you dedicate to things - be that work, play, or family. Shawn's work always leaves me thinking in the back of my mind for a couple days, and I usually come out of the experience for the better.
Squash blossom omelette - What Should I Eat For Breakfast Today - Marta Greber returns to my A-Players roundup with an excellent little piece showing off her zucchini-omelette skills. Marta's pieces are always so much more than just a recipe though, and I love both the photographs that accompany the piece along with the brief little stories that she shares from her life. I love getting to savor her visual work, although I wish I could do the same to her cooking!
Review: 2012 Subaru Impreza - The Truth About Cars - And last but not least, I give you guys A-Players' first car review. This probably won't be a regular thing, but whenever I get some new piece of technology or tool I read up on it - and my car was no different. This is the best review I read of the vehicle, and so if for some reason you're interested too then give it a read.
